Pre essay

I am going to write about the story "nightlife". The theme that I am going to write about is how the war has made Rat crazy. The elements I would use are character, setting, plot, symbol, and theme.  The setting of the story is in Japan. The character I would use is Rat Kiley because he shows crazyness when he shoots himself in the foot.

Blog 18 Night life stockings style

2-3 The main character in the chapter Stockings is Henry Dobbins. Henry Dobbins is a bigger set guy who takes pride in fighting for his country, he feels like a hero. The item he carried throughout war was his girlfriends pantyhose because it was his "good luck"  charm and would also take him to his spiritual world.

The main character in Style was a fourteen year old girl with black hair and brown skin. Who Azar and Henry Dobins saw dancing outside of her house with no shoes and her eyes closed on her toes. They always wondered why she was dancing maybe it because her families house got destroyed and now the family is dead and burnt badly. Physically nothing was being carried in this chapter.

The main character in Night life is Rat Kiley. A few words about Rat Kiley that Mitchell Sanders has been saying was he "lost his cool" while he has been working on the platoon which only moved at night for two weeks they have been living the night life. The routine was simple during those two weeks, sleep during the day  and at dusk put their gear on and move out at night, they worried about getting cut off from the rest of the unit.  Rat Kiley finally hit a wall he couldn't sleep during the day instead he would picture how the guys would look dead even without arms. Rat Kiley noticed he was losing his mind he ended up shooting himself the next morning, he took his boots and socks off, and doped himself up, shot himself with a round right in the foot.

4. The type of bravery that the stories convey is that in style the little girl doesn’t care about what Azar thinks of her dancing.
The type of bravery shown in night life is that Rat Kiley was not happy with the idea of going to Japan and shot himself in the foot.
The type of bravery shown in stockings is that Henry Dobbin’s girlfriend broke up with him and even though he showed sadness for a little while, he eventually just used his stockings for comfort.
5. Some men love war because like the narrator describes Dobbins in the chapter Stockings, “Dobbins felt the pull of superstition, and he believed firmly and absolutely in the protection power”.
6. The style of writing in all of these stories the narrator explain what is going on in the present.
7. I think that Henry Dobbins has changed a lot.  Henry Dobbins has changed because before he was a man that gave short worded responses, had no patience, and wasn’t understanding. Now, he stood up for the little girl that was dancing when Azar was making fun of her.
8. What I can use to make my presentation a solid, coherent, in-depth, and challenging presentation is use the book for my information. Considering, half of the class has not even purchased the book yet, it will be challenging for those students because sometimes information from the book isn’t on the internet.
9. I will ensure that the audience participates attentively throughout the presentation by making the presentation 100% visual and not lecturing my classmates. Also by making up a game such as a crossword puzzle relating to my chapters.

How the activities that my group uses will benefit the other students is that with more hands on activities it was get their attention as well as keeping them interested. Before we present, everyone should read chapters: Style, Stockings, and Night Life.

BLOG 15 the things they carried

If I was going away and could only take five things, The items I would bring would be clothes, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner and my phone . I would take these things because they are very important and I use everyday.Clothes can be used to keep me warm, cool and dry in the different weather  conditions wherever I may be. Shampoo and conditioner is a must so I can stay clean and not be dirty and prevent from getting diseases, same goes for a tooth brush I would prevent from getting sick and staying clean. My phone would be good because it would help me keep in contact and look for help when needed.

Grendel 1

In the story “Grendal”, Grendal listens to a Shapers philosphy on the world with no color.“The idea was that people who were feeling morally dirty would be quicker to make the connection between immorality and blackness on the moral Stroop test, which is exactly what they found. And what’s more, they found this with much looser definitions of morality and immorality—including words like dieting, gossip, duty, partying, helping, and so forth. In other words, those primed for misbehavior linked blackness not only with crime and cheating but with being irresponsible, unreliable, self-centered slackers. “

Emeniem shows how people have to be better then others and what people have to go through. It shows how normal the world is.

first poetry blog

The VacuumBy Howard Nemerov

The house is so quiet now
The vacuum cleaner sulks in the corner closet,
Its bag limp as a stopped lung, its mouth
Grinning into the floor, maybe at my
Slovenly life, my dog-dead youth.

I’ve lived this way long enough,
But when my old woman died her soul
Went into that vacuum cleaner, and I can’t bear
To see the bag swell like a belly, eating the dust
And the woolen mice, and begin to howl

Because there is old filth everywhere
She used to crawl, in the corner and under the stair.
I know now how life is cheap as dirt,
And still the hungry, angry heart
Hangs on and howls, biting at air.

The reason I like the poem in general  is because the author wrote in a way that sounds like its more personal about his life. When I was reading the poem it made me feel confused at first then I started to feel awkward because it was about death and I was not expecting that from a poem called "The Vacuum".  What was in the poem that I liked was the title because I thought it was about cleaning and the first few lines make it seem about cleaning and it was a common interest on how the author and I felt about the vacuum but it was not that way the more I kept reading.

3 of my favorite lines:
1)To see the bag swell like a belly
The reason I liked this line is because I pictured a vacuum cleaner bag  swell up, it helped me understand what the author is saying and how he is describing it.
2) I've lived this way long enough
The reason I like this line is because it helped me understand how the author is feeling, and that he is depressed and sad wants to move on with his life.
3) When my old woman died
The reason i like this line is because I did not understand the poem at first but when I read this sentence and came across this line, I understood that the author was talking about his wife.
